Oak Island Ferry

Half way through our two week beach trip we decided to take a break from all the sand and take a ferry ride to Oak Island. It's more of a peninsula since you could drive there if you went way out of the way but it was a fun ride for the kids. We drove our cars onto the ferry and then got to climb up to the observation deck which was nicely air conditioned.
We think the ferry boat stirs up fish in its wake because there were tons of seagulls flying around the back of the boat. People were even throwing them bread and getting them even closer. Harrison just wanted to run around and not be in our arms so it's was a little hard to wrangle him for the 30 minute trip.
We drove around the island and stopped at Fort Fisher, an old Civil War fort. We hadn't even made it inside when Harrison started running and fell. His face hit the ground and made his nose bleed which got all over his shirt and mine. He's so adorable to watch run with his short legs pumping and the rest of his body just jiggling but he's still not that safe on his own. We decided to take the outdoor stroll around the actual Fort but regretted it when we were out in the 95 degree heat and 85 percent humidity. Needless to say we didn't stay very long and headed back to the car to catch the next ferry back.
We ate lunch at the Pharmacy Restaurant and I mistakenly ordered crab cakes which had a Dijon mustard sauce which I really detest. Jane raved about how great they were so I ordered them but hadn't really read the menu. Jeff was really sweet to let me eat some of his delicious pasta. James has discovered soda on this trip, mostly due to Cami and her kids. He ordered a sprite and after tasting it said it burned but that didn't deter him. Now he asks for soda even for breakfast! What does he think this is? Vacation from all nutrition? Okay, maybe some days it seems like it.
